The Right Choice

“While they were traveling, he entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s feet and was listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.

The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38–42

Friend,

September is here.
School is back in session.
The ministry season is rocking and rolling.

I find myself in the nonstop hum of activity. My body is adjusting to the early-morning rush of packing lunches and boisterous preteen boys arguing over who will use the bathroom first.

By 7:30 a.m., I am out the door, feeling like I’ve already experienced a day's worth of work. At the office, I’m greeted by a roster of meetings and projects with deadlines approaching. I brace myself for the unexpected ministry crisis that falls into my lap.

My stomach growls, reminding me it’s lunchtime. I stop to refuel before I cram in more work. Soon it's time to pick up the boys from school, make dinner, and help with homework.

I look up. The clock reads 8:30 pm. I wind down for the evening, heading to bed.

If I am not careful, I will miss my Savior’s quiet invitation for me to sit at His feet.

If I am honest, I have heard and ignored His voice beckoning me, “Danielle, come rest with me.”

I rationalize my actions.

“But Lord, I have so much to do. I am serving You. I don’t really have time to slow down. Do you see all the things I have to do?”

Always a gentleman, He doesn’t force me. He waits for me. He allows me to realize that no amount of serving will ever replace sitting in His presence.

Eventually, an undeniable yearning for His peace and love draws me home.

A place where I don’t have to perform or produce.
A place of rest and abiding.
A place to delight in His fullness and love.
A place where I can be with my Savior and not fear that this time is wasted or wrong.

When others come knocking for me to get up and serve, I don’t have to move or defend my actions. He reminds them (and me) that I have made the right choice and it will not be taken away from me.

In His Love,
Danielle
